How I Saved $1827
Making My Own Roman Shades
My name is Jennifer Thoden a.k.a. Jenny T. and I wasn't always a sewer. In fact, even though my mother sewed clothing and all kinds of things as I grew up... my interest in sewing really wasn't there.
After I got married... and had my first home... I wanted to decorate my home. But like most people starting out in life, I did not have a lot of money. I had a new job and a new baby... there was not a lot of money to spend on having custom window treatments made.
I loved the look of roman shades because they offered privacy. I love the idea of being able to select my own fabric and hang it on the window. And I liked the idea of how it looks when you raise it and it pleats.
As a gift for Christmas, my mother-in-law... who always gives great great gifts at Christmas time... decided that she was going to have my roman shades made for me. Yes, very generous!
So, she took me to a local decorator fabric store and had me pick out the fabric of my choice. We then gave the nice lady at the counter the measurements for 2 windows... I only had 2 windows in my living room... and anxiously awaited the quote to make my roman shades.
I was so excited! I imagined walking into my townhouse everyday and marveling at how amazing my living room looked. My friends would stop by and swoon at the beauty of my home. They would stand there staring at my custom roman shades... wishing they had them on their windows. My roman shades would be the talk of the town.
Well, my bubble was burst by one simple number... I almost fell over when she told us how much it would cost for 2 standard sized roman shades. $1827!!
My mother-in-law is generous... but not that generous. So, the next words out of her mouth were... we can make these ourselves. I looked at her bewildered... but nodded my head. I thought... there is no way I'm going to be able to make custom roman shades! I don't even know how to sew!
But we perservered! We found a local class that taught sewing roman shades... and we signed up! Now, you may think that this is the end of my story. That I learned how to make roman shades and that everyone lived happily ever after. But that is not the case at all!
My mother-in-law and I attended the class with my VERY expensive fabric. We had the measurements in hand. We followed the instructor as she lead us through the steps. Many times I was lost... mainly because I didn't sew! But I did it! And I was so excited! I had one completed roman shade to take home and install on my window. The anticipation was killing me! I had to see how this amazing custom roman shade... that I made... was going to look!
We get home... I installed it onto my window... and.... it was too narrow. By about 3 inches! At first, I thought that maybe we made a mistake in our measurements. But we didn't. The instructor's instructions were wrong.
So, my mother-in-law and I struggled to figure out how to fix this very expensive mess. We dug through sewing books to find instructions on making roman shades. We found very little to none. And the ones we did find were vague and even more confusing.
And so... "How To Make Roman Shades" was born!
